These are the images I grew up with . . . sewing patterns from the 1950s-60s. Moms and grandmas back then more often than not owned a sewing machine they actually put some wear and tear on. These patterns were inspiration points for me; the models in the illustrations looking like something you’d find on Madmen.
Hopefully patterns like this, still available through So Vintage can act as muse for you too. If you’re thinking of going custom it’s worth checking out buying a vintage pattern. Yes, the patterns are one-of-a-kind which means one size only but they have an online resource with instructions on how to size a pattern up or down (convenient for your designer or dressmaker).
So Vintage is great too if you’re in love with an era before the 1940’s. While they don’t have the same vast selection as 1950s or 60s, there is going to be enough for you to find a starting point for your design.
Be sure to check out the evening and just plain old day time dress sections of your favorite era as well. If you and your designer are already working together, I recommend you both look at this site together. He/she will be able to advise you on which pattern could be changed or altered to fit your vision.
