Scott Chester Photography is the story of two kids who have been in love since high school. Along the way they were joined by two stunningly awesome little girls & became known as mom & dad. That life eventually grew to include this amazing business that surrounds our family with constant heaps of love & happiness and now we're pretty sure we are the luckiest couple ever! We're inspired wholeheartedly by people in love and our imagination & creativity are fueled by real connections. Our boutique studio is based in Atlanta & we're available globally for wedding commissions.WU: How did you become wedding photographers?S&C: It was actually very happenstance that we went down the wedding photography road. Scott was pretty much 'raised' a photographer (his dad was a brilliant commercial photographer & filmmaker). He began to see life in frames at the age of 8 when he was handed his first camera. He went on to pursue a fine art degree in photography and then started his professional career in architectural and commercial photography. A few years later he was asked to photograph a good friend's wedding and he decided to give it a whirl. He was surprised at how much he loved the change of pace & emotional connection to the images. It also helped that he was given complete creative freedom & actually photographed a good bit of the wedding with a Holga toy camera! Afterwards, a lot of their newly engaged friends started inquiring about their own weddings and the business just sort of took off from there.WU: Tell us what it's like to work as a husband and wife team.S&C: We love running a creative business together! It allows us to stay connected to each other & to our family. Cristen keeps the studio running smoothly so Scott can focus on the photography side of things. The freedom of being our own boss is really nice when our schedules need to be super flexible to stay home with a sick child or we decide to skip off for a bicycle ride or yoga class in the middle of the day :)WU: Digital or film or both? why?S&C: We made the switch from film to digital for wedding photography several years ago because of the flexibility & immediacy it allows during the fast pace of a wedding event. Scott loves what he is able to do in post production with digital imagery, too. It feels like being in a darkroom again but with different tools! We still use film often for personal projects & for some of our architectural commissions.WU: Describe your wedding photography style.S&C: We've crafted a very distinct style of wedding imagery, combining editorial portraits with photojournalistic moments & have a penchant for often overlooked details.WU: What inspires you? What inspires your photography?S&C: The short answer is that life inspires us & our photography!WU: How do you keep your wedding photography fresh?S&C: Every time we pick up the camera we challenge ourselves to delve deeper & create a new perspective to tell a story. Limiting our number of wedding commissions each year & being selective about the couples we choose to work with keeps the inspiration high and our photography fresh.WU: Do you do non-wedding photography work? If so, how does it influence your wedding photography?S&C: Yes, we still take on commercial & architectural commissions throughout the year. Scott's early background photographing these type of projects has always influenced our wedding commissions from early on and contributed to the unique perspective & imagery we are able to create for our wedding clients. A combination of sense of space + place, creative use of lines + angles & other architectural elements are a common thread in a lot of our wedding photography.WU: What would be your ideal wedding assignment?S&C: Since we limit our number of wedding commissions each year, we make sure they are all ideal! Honestly, the key element for it to be an ideal collaboration is working with a couple that we feel an immediate connection with that completely gets our creative vision and 100% trusts us to do our thing. Getting asked by clients to help select other wedding vendors to create a dream team & shooting at new destinations is always a bonus :)WU: Tell us three things you cannot live without.S&C: Besides each other, our daughters and our family & closest friends...Scott: good music, endless imagination & always having a vintage car to restore in my spare time.Cristen: experiencing new cultures through travel adventures, delicious organic food & my weekly hot yoga classes.WU: What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?S&C: Do what you love, love what you do & try to leave the world a better place. It's our daily credo!WU: What is the best advice you can give to an engaged couple?S&C: Have fun & create a wedding that is infused with your story & personal styles in every detail. Hire a team of wedding professionals that makes your heart sing & then 100% trust their visions to make your wedding day all aces. Finally, make sure to carve out pockets of time throughout all the planning hoopla to focus on the real celebration - cultivating the happily ever after part of your lives together!
