{Steal Worthy Weddings} A Contemporary DIY Event

Good morning, lovelies! What are you up to on this crisp, fall Friday? I’m excited to end the week with this sophisticated, steal worthy wedding packed with dreamy DIY elements.

You know… sometimes it’s a perfect detail that really gets me. Other times it’s a fabulous dress, a gorgeous decor or a stunning cake. But today, it’s the ENTIRE event. Yes, it is a beyond-beautiful, stylish affair overflowing with steal-worthy deets…. a marriage between the old and the new, featuring classic elements with the modern touch of a present- day couple.

Get inspired by my breakdown on every worth-to-steal piece from these nuptials. And don’t forget to keep your eyes open for fabulous DIY ideas you may want to borrow for your own wedding!

The Ceremony Decor: I love the contrast between the vibrant pinks and aquas against the simple white background. It's elegant...it's modern... it's timeless!

Bridesmaids' Look: The bridesmaids wore Breakfast at Tiffany’s inspired black cocktail dresses, that they would be able to wear again, with vintage stud earrings, and fuchsia satin peep toe pumps with bow accents. To give the contemporary twist of the mismatched bridesmaids to this classic look, they each wore a different brooch... genius!

The Bouquet: You know I'm a sucker of peony bouquets, but this one takes the cake. The colors are gorgeous. The clouds of aqua tulle are a lovely way to bring in the something-blue. Notice how this bride kept a comprehensive look by wearing an aqua bracelet and pink lipstick that matched the bouquet colors.

The Modern Venue: With clean lines and minimalist design, this is the perfect setting for a couple with a unique style and vision. With the bride's art background, and the groom’s carpentry skills, this couple took advantage of this blank canvas and really made the space our own.

The Color Palette: The fuchsia, aqua, black and white color palette of this wedding is just perfectly coordinated right down to the spots on the contemporary glam.

DIY Details: From custom welcome sign, hand-painted aqua vases and frame collage, this couple had a very hands-on approach to planning their special day. They also created vintage birdcages and ruffled clam shells, adorned with glossy white driftwood, tulle and fuchsia flowers.

The Home Made Cake: OMG! can you believe this bride actually make this gorgeous cake by herself. She's definitely an artist. But even if you're not as talented as she is, this is, hands down, a steal-worthy cake. Take the picture to your baker and you are good to go, my friend!

The Flower Girls Outfits: Let's take a moment to admire this dazzling flower girl dresses. Beautiful, right? If you're using any vibrant color on your wedding day, the flower girl dresses are the perfect place to bring them to play. Little girls look adorable in bright colors!

THE PEEK-A-BOO FACTOR

You have to admit, the 1950's Rockabilly dress is tres chic right now and lots of brides are going for the look. Getting the look means first adding the right volume to your full skirt to make it stand out. Swank Underpinnings carries poufy half slips in all lengths to accentuate that 50's silhouette. As a designer of primarily 50s dresses my advise to you would be make sure your under slip is worn separately from your dress (read: yes, as in a whole separate piece). Why? You don't want to add bulk to the waistline. Wedding gowns have enough heavy duty handiwork going on inside, why add more? I know most gowns come with built-ins, but do ask your salon when placing the order to have the designer send your slip as a separate component from the gown.

Adding color underneath your dress hints at it once you lift your skirt. Or better yet, how about going for the Peek-A-Boo factor? That means that a little touch of red or purple or whatever color you want slips beyond the hemline. How that for chic . . .?

Tulle and just about any kind of silk are a magnificent combination. This dupioni sheath is swathed in a removable tulle over skirt . . . .

The headpiece echoes the bodice as three dupioni hand rolled florals are topped with French netting . . . .

6 Stylish Ways To Incorporate Paper Flowers In A Sophisticated Wedding

OK you princesses ofchic style. It’s time for another installment of sophisticated wedding ideas…This time we would talk about Paper Flowers… I know what you’re thinking! “Bellesupposed to be a blog for sophisticated weddings, and well, paper flowers don’tsound sophisticated at all”. But, if you stay with me the next couple ofminutes, I promise I will change your mind. I’m going to show you how you canfit paper flowers, a very whimsical trend, into your wedding in a super-stylishway. Let’s get to the goodness!

1. Bouquets: If abouquet entirely made out of paper flowers is too informal or whimsy for you.Consider the idea of incorporating paper flowers into a brooch bouquet. Youwould fit in the trend while maintaining the glamour on your look. 2. Wedding Cake: Paper flowers may just be the perfect element to bring color to a simple white wedding cake. They also look really cute on mini-cakes. 3. Ceremony Decor: Holy Gorgeousness! If you' are all about ROMANCE, this first set-up will surely be your cup of tea. Now for the second one, you may want to bring a more classic and romantic approach add some candles to these setups. But, other than that...beautiful!

4. Centerpieces: Combining paper flowers with natural flowers for your centerpieces would bring in a modern touch to your table decor. Paper flowers would come specially handy, when you want to incorporate into your centerpieces a color that natural flowers don't come on. Check for example this gray paper flowers. Now if glamour is what you are looking for gold or silver paper flowers may be a good choice.

Claudette Colbert as Ellie Andrews, Audrey Hepburn as Jo Stockton. No, they weren't real brides but the designers, writers and producers who created them certainly were. Hollywood designers and the actresses who wore their creations influenced the way we look at weddings and fashion today. All the gowns pictured here are works of art and stellar representatives of their times. What could be more 1930s than Robert Kalloch's creation for Claudette Colbert in It Happened One Night? The body-hugging bias cut was still a new, even radical concept in 1934, especially for a wedding gown. During this golden era, it was not Paris as much as Hollywood that decreed fashion. This simple satin gown with florals surrounding the neckline could be found today in a few designer collections. The look has become timeless. Attached to the cap head piece you'll see miles of chiffon netting, a light and airy fabric the designer chose because in this story, Colbert needs to become the runaway bride once she decides Clark Gable is the one. As she runs, the veil, long as it is, lifts and floats beautifully off the ground to produce a kind of 'bride in flight' look.

The Givenchy on Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face has become a favorite for brides of every decade. When clients bring in inspiration photos so I can get an idea of what they want in a gown, this photo is pulled out often. And sometimes it is not the exact same dress a bride wants so much as 'the look' it evokes, the epitome of pure, flawless design.

Above is one of the purest, most traditional wedding designs out there (the other is princess Grace's--also by a Hollywood designer, Helen Rose). I'm glad I finally found this image of Julie Andrews in Dorothy Jeakins shantung wedding gown. It's from one of the most beautiful movies ever made, The Sound of Music. Raised in an abbey by cloistered nuns, when Maria marries Captain Von Trapp she marches down the aisle alone. This really touched me when I first saw this movie as a kid. So much so that when my own day came to meet my intended and take my vows, I too walked alone and gave myself away.

The gown Elizabeth Taylor is wearing was standard for its time. Post war, the world celebrated lifts on fabric restrictions by using vast amounts of it in skirts. Bridal gowns were the ultimate show-off the hourglass shape vehicle. The MGM release of Father of the Bride coincided with Taylor's own real, life nuptials with hotel heir, Nicky Hilton. Both her own and fictional wedding gown was designed by Helen Rose.

Below right is Carrie Bradshaw's Ivory silk taffeta confection. It's actually one of the finale pieces from Vivienne Westwood's 2007 "Wake Up Cave Girl" Collection. Hand picked by Sex in the City stylist, Patricia Field, personally, I was surprised Sara Jessica didn't rate a custom designed gown for her role in the film. I mean heck! Check out Audrey Hepburn. Didn't she rate that one-of-a-kind-designed-to-fit-her-character Givenchy tulle wedding dress pictured above? The suit on the left would have been my choice . . . and . . .ultimately it was Carrie's as well.

I am madly in lovewith this ultra-chic wedding. And I mean madly. From those monogrammedghost chairs (swoon) to the stunning flowers (double swoon) to all of thegorgeous, gorgeous elements so worth to steal, there are not enough minutes inthe day for this wedding and me. So, join me in this rendezvous of amazingwedding details.

Hanging Crystals: I mentioned before how hanging decorations would make a fabulous statement on any wedding. But, this couple really took this wedding trend to a whole new level of awesomeness. The sparkle of the crystals in the pink light madefor an absolutely awesome look at the dance floor and crated a fabulous space for everyone to dance all night.

Monogrammed Ghost Chairs: OMG, I'm so in love with this detail. I love mixing modernand classic elements. I believe that’s the secret to create a really memorableevent. Ghost chairs are frequent ingredients in modern weddings. But, bringingthem into a more classic affair like this one places in a tap of contemporary feelingand creates an unforgettable impression. This couple took the memorable factorevent further by monogramming the chairs… swoon!

The Cake Table: This classic wedding cake is adorable, but the table setting just takes the cake. LOL. From now on, naturalflowers pined to table-covers are a yes on my book. Especially, if they look anyclose to this refined cake table.

Mixing Table Shapes: Ifyou are a frequent of Belle, you know I’m a sucker of long tables. However, I appreciatewhen a couple mixes long, round and even square tables to include extra dimensionson their reception decor. Also, notice how the long tables and the round tableshave different types of centerpieces. The long ones have more contemporary arrangements,while the round tables have centerpieces in a classic style. And they used oneof my latest obsessions, candelabras!

The Place-card Tree: I have seen a lot of beautiful place-card trees, but this one is SO. FREAKING. GORGEOUS. I love gold wedding details. S,o this golden branches and the crystals just make me smile.

For me 20th Century fashion is the chicest and most flattering of all time. These gowns were all inspired by Christian Dior who revolutionized fashion in 1947 with his “New Look”, a 180 turn out of the gray days of fashion following WWII. Once restrictions lifted on fabric post war, Dior had the freedom to introduce the hourglass silhouette, showing off a cinched waist atop skirts flowing in yards of silks and layers of crinoline. Recently this defined waist has made a come back and brides are loving it. . . .

The Dress: You have to admit that nothing says glamour like gold details on a wedding dresses! This bride's dress isn't only the perfect balance between classy and sexy, but it screams vintage elegance like nothing I've ever seen before.

The Venue: I know... barn doesn’t sound very sophisticated! But, some pretty chairs, gorgeous linens, elegant centerpieces and accessories; plus some chic touches here and there add a lot of sophistication to a rustic spot.

Candelabras and Candle Holders: There is never too many candles on a wedding. Specially if you want to create a romantic feeling. Make yours this look by incorporating gold candelabras to your wedding decor. You'll create a stylish romantic ambiance with a touch of vintage feel, just like this one.

Chandeliers: If you want to make a statement from floor to celling incorporating hanging wedding decor like this stunning chandeliers would add a fantastic fairy tale feel and contribute to the lighting mood of the event.

The Sitting: I'm in love with this opulent wedding chairs. They bring a royal air to the event... Don't you think?

The Flowers: To create contrast to the soft color palette, this genius bride used different types of flowers in a wide variety of dark shades and mixed them with soft pinks and light blues. The final touch... the gold vases to keep a comprehensive look.

The Draping: To transform the barn into a more refine space, this couple draped the site walls of the room, and left the rustic wood showed in the backdrop, which kept alive the rustic charm of the building. But, what made the draping element even more special was the color of the fabric. That peach shade is just dreamy!

Bridesmaid Dresses and Accessories: Neutrals are so hot this year, especially when it comes to bridesmaid dresses. Neutrals shades give mismatched dresses a more unified look than any other color. Try them all in a short length, like this bridal party did, to give you, the bride, a more distinctive look.

Birdcage veils are the ultimate vintage accessory. But, if you like to keep your look a bit more classic incorporating birdcage veils to your bridesmaid's attire may just be the perfect way to add a vintage feel to your bridal party .

Finally, there were two amazing details on the wedding ceremony that catch my eye right away; first, the rustic door in the middle of the outdoor ceremony, and second, the mats and petals that ply the role of an isle runner. Stunning!

CELEBRATING THE A-LINE

The hourglass wasn’t Christian Dior’s only reinvention. His A-line hit big in 1955 and stayed with us. An A-line cut is a more modified form of hourglass, bringing with it refinement and understatement. Fitted through the bodice, the A-line can have a slight to moderate flair in the skirt. Dubbed by fashionistas as “The Deb Dress” it’s been one of the most popular silhouettes for the reason it flatters just about every figure type.

Variations of the A-line

Classic-Can be slightly flared to full, you see it everywhere; mostly with a strapless bodice in medium to heavy fibers. Below is a cotton version with a Sabrina neckline. Stunning.

Princess-Fitted bodice flowing into a skirt that has two parallel vertical seams running up front and back; can have a slight to full flare in the skirt. Very flattering. Especially great for petites or any woman wanting to add height. Heavier brides benefit too from the vertical seams drawing the eye, up, up, up.
