Here's a step-by-step guide for creating your own watermelon masterpiece for the next celebration in your life. It's guaranteed to amaze and awe your friends and family. Just imagine how good you will feel serving your loved ones something yummy AND healthy. And guess what...the production cost is cheaper than ordering a cake from a bakery. Why not give this a try?
Watermelon Cake
Ingredients: Watermelon, fruit skewers, and a variety of fruit for garnishing.
First, go to your local farmers market, farm, or produce department and pick out a massive watermelon. The seeded melons will have more flavor.
Once you get this baby home, slice the ends off.
Stand watermelon on end and shave the sides.
Next, carefully slice your "cake" layers.
I suggest cutting layers at least 4-inches thick and then setting them to the side for assembling. Don't worry about shaping them just yet.
Slice the remaining watermelon into 1-inch rounds for making fun melon shapes with cookie cutters. Keep a large pretty serving bowl available for putting scrap watermelon pieces in. You'll need this for the party.
Choose your largest round layer for the base of your "cake" and place it on a serving platter. You can trim and shape the edges better if needed before putting it on the platter. Continue building your cake by trimming one layer at a time to create a tiered "cake" with as many layers as you desire. Place a long wooden skewer through the center of the layers to hold in place once you have completed it. Remember to put all trimmed melon scraps into a serving bowl.
After cake is assembled, begin garnishing with fruit of your choice. Prepare a fruit or melon salad to go on the platter around the base of the "cake." Place berries or grapes around the base of each layer. Use toothpicks to secure if needed. Make a creative cake topper to fit your party theme. You could use fruit, edible flowers, or a child's toy. Skewered fruit really completes the "cake," giving it a festive look. The fruit skewers are also convenient and fun for your guests.
Let your creative juices flow. Make this recipe your own. Stand back and be amazed at how much your loved ones will enjoy this "cake." Don't forget to include a serving bowl full of watermelon on the table, because no one will want to cut into this beautiful piece of artwork.
A BIG thank you goes out to Connie at the Naked Food Cafe for being my inspiration :)

Great instructions Sarah! I never would have thought about the store needing to have large watermelons for the cut bowls. I wondered where you would get a watermelon large enough. I only make them during watermelon season, but I'm sure it was a bigger treat and surprise in the middle of winter! :)
Hugs!
Connie
Wow! Awesome!
I'll be back to comment, but I wanted to let you know that I nominated you for a Kreativ Blogger Award.

Hi Victoria,

Beautiful. Gluten free, sugar free, diary free!
I just woke up from a dream where I made a watermelon layer cake and so I googeled it. This is pretty close to my dream cake. Thanks for the extra ideas!
Hi Webly! I'm so glad you found your "dream cake" :~) I love making watermelon cakes. They're such fun and everyone loves them. When you prepare one, I'd love to see a picture.
Hello this is a great cake idea for vegans and raw foodists I am working on a cookbook right now and would like to have permission to use a variation of this recipe for the dessert section. Please let me know if that will be ok

Ayida, I appreciate your request for permission. Some people would have just used it without asking. I'm hoping to compile a recipe book one day and I'd like my originality to be preserved. With that said, you are welcome to use a variation of this recipe if you are original in your description, pictures, and recipe title. Have a wonderful day!!!
Hugs,
Sarah
Thank you Sarah I will do a variation on this theme with my own instructions and title, and I will acknowledge you as well! I would like to keep you posted on my progress with the book and offer you a copy when it is complete.
thanks again
